1.Cognitive behavioural psychology (CBT) is recognised by Medicare Australia because it is evidence based. This means that there is a lot of research to back up its usefulness and efficacy.
Basically, CBT is based on the premise that your feelings and actions in relation to an event are caused by your beliefs about the event. Therefore, as a client, you will learn to identify your beliefs and how to challenge them. On a behavioural level, you will be taught healthy behaviours and routines to maximise your well being. Relaxation is one such behaviour.
CBT can be practised individually or in groups. It can be geared to be specific for anxiety, anger, stress, and depression.
2.Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), is less well known than CBT but also been proven to be effective. The focus of IPT is on expressing emotion and looking for solutions in a focused way. Medicare Australia recognises and gives rebates for this modality.
3.Psycho-education is also recognised by Medicare Australia as a benefit to people who need assistance to proceed. Renee specialises in parenting advice and can also advise about pain, health, stress and well-being. Psycho-education can be processed alone or in a group setting.
4. Short term psycho-dynamic therapy works with unconscious processes.
For one, the transference relationship between therapist and client is examined. Second, the history of the client is discussed at length and seen to influence the present situation.
The aim of this type of therapy is to make unconscious thoughts conscious thereby gaining insight which promotes growth.
5.Couple counselling, is not covered by Medicare but is covered by many private health funds. Seeking help as a couple is invaluable when you consider that you are saving a relationship and even a whole family.
In this type of therapy, the “patient” is the relationship. The therapist looks at the dynamic between the couple and aims to improve the dynamic to the benefit of both partners.
6. Group therapy has several advantages over individual therapy. Members of a group provide support for one another. When they share, each person can learn from the others. Making a commitment to others is often an incentive to keep coming so that you do not let the rest of the group down.
When you are part of a group you do not feel alone or different. Long after the structure of the group ends, group members can stay in touch and give ongoing support.
7. Family therapy became popular in the 1970′s and is a very specialised treatment. It requires all members of the family to participate.
The family is seen as a system where each part of the system interacts with every other part. Change in one part of the system effects change in every other part of the system. That is why it is usually short term and can have quick and remarkable results.
8.Play therapy is traditionally utilised with young children because they are not able to articulate their feelings. However, through play, a child can express their innermost thoughts and the therapist can interpret them.
Play also utilises the imagination which enables a child to act out fears or hero fantasies.
9. Workers compensation. In Australia, psychologists need to be registered to give therapy to workers compensation patients. Ben Ebert is eligible to work with workers compensation clients.
10. Psychometric evaluation of children. Frequently, children are not coping academically at school or are behaving badly at home or at school. Educational psychologists like Vivien Suttner are highly trained in this area to administer a complete and comprehensive assessment.
Generally an IQ test, emotional tests and educational tests are done to look at all 3 of these areas.
11.Renee also offers emwave therapy which is a biofeedback system to help you to learn how to relax. it is a simple software that monitors your heart rate by clipping onto your ear. As you relax, you get immediate feedback that your heart rate is slowing and you learn how to slow it down yourself. It is a lot of fun because the learning takes place as a game.
13. Sometimes couples are not looking for therapy but need to resolve conflict and reach agreements over issues like parenting plans and financial settlements.
Mediation and conflict resolution for couples and organisations needing to reach agreements is available.
