Counseling

September 18th, 2009

There are several different forms of therapy, or counselling which I offer in my practice, either myself or by a highly trusted associate.

Cognitive behavioural psychology (CBT) is recognised by Medicare Australia because it has a lot of evidence to back up its usefulness and efficacy. Basically, CBT is based on the premise that your feelings and actions in relation to an event are caused by your beliefs about the event. Therefore, as a client, you will learn to identify your beliefs and how to challenge them. On a behavioural level, you will be taught healthy behaviours and routines to maximise your well being. Relaxation is one such behaviour.

CBT can be practised individually or in groups.

Medicare Australia also recognises Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), which is less well known but also been proven effective. The focus of IPT is on expressing emotion and looking for solutions in a focused way.

Psycho-education is also recognised by Medicare Australia as a benefit to people who need assistance to proceed.  I specialise in parenting courses which offer education to parents but can also advise about pain, health, stress and well being. Psycho-education can be processed alone or in a group setting.

My practice also offers couple counselling, which is not covered by Medicare but is covered by many private health funds. Seeking help as a couple is invaluable when you consider you are saving a relationship and even a whole family.

I also offer emwave therapy which is a biofeedback system to help you to learn how to relax.

My associates offer play therapy for children (covered by Medicare) from age 5 and up; as well as therapy which is suitable for adolescents. Mediation for couples and families needing to reach agreements is also available.
